FINALLY! The first blog post on the “Garden Updates” page is here! Sorry for keeping you people waiting. I know that there are many who are eager for some updates of SPENV Garden@Moberly. Rest assured that our garden has been through a few stages and there are progress being made to make it the ‘premier’ garden in SP.

*Admin's Note* SPENV's Blog can be found at http://spenv.cca.sg/

Let the first blog post of this page be a post event write-up of our Gardening Workshop. This workshop was organised by Orchid & Lush Gardens and held in the Toh Orchids Farm at Sungei Tengah on Saturday, 27 November 2010. This workshop is part of our aim to ‘upgrade the skills’ and ‘increase productivity’ of our members in SPENV.  (You know that Singapore is going towards this direction…) Shu Huey, Yew Keong, Xin Ying and I were happy to be attending this workshop as it was a new experience for us. Here are their reflections:

“Orchid - Singapore’s national flower. Besides this fact, I don’t really know much about the plant by the name of Orchid. Mr Wilson, the course conductor, has taught me a lot about this particular type of flower. Through this workshop, I’ve learnt the history of this flower, the different types of species of Orchid, the parts of the Orchid plant, reproduction and the care and handling of this beautiful plant. This workshop gave me an experience of planting flowering plants which I’ve never tried before up to now in my life. I really find that this is an interesting workshop to attend and would really recommend others to go for this and more people could appreciate the magnificence Singapore’s national flower.”

– Wong Yew Keong EEE

“Today’s workshop has allowed me to gain basic knowledge on gardening of orchids. We enjoyed ourselves during the hands-on session i.e. de-flasking, propagating and transplanting of orchids, and, of course, not forgetting Mr Wilson’s excellent sense of humour that makes the workshop lively. All in all, the workshop was a fun experience. Thank you to DSD for sponsoring this workshop.”

– Lim Xin Ying CLS

Not only have we learnt about orchids, we also learnt the other aspects of gardening of other plants. So, with this new knowledge in our hands (or heads), we can further improve our gardening skills, promote a culture of gardening among SP students and help us reduce our carbon footprint and lead a sustainable lifestyle

Sorry for making this first blog post very long but we really want to share our experiences to everyone. (Really!) Please do stay updated on this page. We will share with you other stories on gardening by SPENV in the blog posts to come. Study hard!
