Friends of Environment

Increase your circle of friends by joining your fellow environmentalists! Make a difference and have FUN doing your part for the Environment. Check out the various student organisations, non-governmental organisations and companies who are actively involved in environmental activities.

 

Student Organisations

Saving the Environment does not stop after primary and secondary school. Currently, many Green volunteers in polytechnics and universities have set up their own clubs and societies to save the environment while having loads of fun! Join them and be inspired by their enthusiasm.

Universities Polytechnics

NUS SAVE
SAVE Students Against Violation of the Earth (SAVE) is the main environmental student organization in NUS. Strongly supported by the NUS administration, NUS Students’ Union (NUSSU) and the academia, we are at the forefront of promoting environmental awareness, activism, stewardship and initiating impactful environmental programmes in the university campus and beyond to combat global climate change. Events organised includes, talks, conferences, advocating campus policies and campaigning.

EARTHlink NTU
EARTHlink is the environmental club in NTU that aims to promote environmental awareness among students by creating opportunities for students to participate in activities that save the environment. The club organizes events such as outdoor trips, beach clean-up sessions, camps, design competitions, and Environmental Week.

SP Environment Club
It aims to raise awareness of environmental issues, instill a sense of responsibility and commitment to protect the environment, and educate and cultivate interest in the environment. Green activities organized include beach clean-ups, SP Clean & Green Week, environmental watches, river raft races, recycling programmes and camps.

Campus Green Team
Ngee Ann Polytechnic set up a Campus Green Team to spearhead environmental awareness and activities among staff and students. Activities organized include charity drives to collect recyclable waste where funds collected are contributed to environmental organisations, surveys, and design & project competitions.

 

Companies

Profiteering is not the only thing occupying the minds of the corporate world. Many companies have exhibited corporate social behavior by doing their part for the community and actively organizing save-the-environment campaigns. Work in these friendly Green companies and contribute to their efforts to build a more sustainable environment.

Care-for-Nature Programme

HSBC believes in giving back to the wider society and has focused its community support on the environment. HSBC has organized many Care-for-Nature programmes and has won many awards, including MEWR’s Green Leaf Award for their dedication to the environment.

Bayer Young Environmental Envoy

Bayer believes that youths are responsible for shaping the future of their communities. To identify youth leaders in environmental protection, youths worldwide are selected to be a ‘Bayer Young Environmental Envoy’, which provides them the opportunity to learn about existing technologies, facilities and practices in Germany.

Green Wave Environmental Care Project

The Green Wave projects are targeted at students, who are encouraged to submit projects that improve the quality and sustainability of the environment. It hopes to motivate students to appreciate and develop responsibility for the care of their own environment, learn and develop skills investigate the environment and encouraging them to develop new ideas for the betterment of our environment.

Canon Goes Green

As part of canon's contribution to the cause, Canon will plant 2500 seedlings in Padang Kota damansara. Come do your part, contribute a photo and join the movement. One small act can make a difference

 

Non-Governmental Organisations

Proactive members of the public no longer wait for the government to organize environmental activities. Taking their own initiatives, many volunteers have set up organizations to take care of environmental concerns they feel passionate about. Take action, and have a say in changing the environment for the better!

Singapore Environment Council

The SEC is a non-profit organization and an approved charity that aims to promote greater public awareness of and concern for the living and natural environment in Singapore. It encourages members of the public to be more environmentally conscious and display a greater sense of environmental responsibility. The council co-ordinates environmental promotion and protection undertaken in Singapore and organises and assists other organisations and institutions, bodies and persons for the purposes of environmental and protection. The council studies, develops and improves measures for the promotion and protection of the environment which are suitable for adoption by private and public organizations, educational institutions, community organisations, the media and the general public in Singapore.

Nature Society (Singapore)

The Nature Society (NSS) is a non-government, non-profit organisation dedicated to the appreciation, conservation, study and enjoyment of the natural heritage in Singapore, Malaysia and the surrounding region. NSS organises nature appreciation activities like guided nature walks, bird and butterfly watching, slide talks and overseas eco-trips. Some of the activities NSS does include conducting conservation projects and surveys, collaborating with schools and community groups to promote nature appreciation and education, as well as campaigning for the protection of natural habitats.

Waterways Watch Society

First started in 1997, Waterways Watch Society (WWS) is a special volunteer group that brings people together to monitor, restore and protect the aesthetics of our waterways. It conducts weekly patrols of Singapore’s rivers and other waterways. As part of their education strategy, WWS leverages on activities like kayaking, canoeing and dragon boat races, and events like Clean and Green Week and International Coastal Clean-up to spread the message of keeping our waters clean.

Restroom Association of Singapore

The Restroom Association of Singapore (RAS) was established in 1998 with the aim of educating the public and professionals involved in toilet design and construction to keep our toilets clean. RAS investigates dirty toilets, tirelessly promotes clean toilet and ultimately wants to put Singapore on the world map for providing the best public toilets.

Environmental Challenge Organisation

Environmental Challenge Organisation (Singapore), or ECO Singapore is a non-profit, non-government organization. ECO aims to establish a voluntary environmental movement, thereby creating opportunities for active involvement by Singaporean youths, instilling a sense of commitment and awareness of environmental issues and global hazards. By providing youths a holistic approach towards environmental issues, ECO Singapore’s mission is to encourage youths to take the initiative and choose to live environmentally sustainable lifestyles. ECO's main differentiating factor is the promotion of environmental issues in a more holistic manner, achieved by sharing expertise, resources and their volunteer pool with existing local and regional environment groups.

Animal Concerns Research & Education Society

Founded by a group of Singaporeans, Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres) aims to foster respect and compassion for all animals, improve the living conditions and welfare of animals in captivity and educate people on lifestyle choices which do not involve the abuse of animals and which are environment-friendly. Acres strongly believes in promoting community involvement in tackling animal welfare issues and in building partnerships with all related bodies to improve animal welfare. The society is driven by its concern for animals and adopts research projects on the use of animals in various fields. Research findings are then used to educate the public to promote active community involvement in the animal welfare movement, as well as strive towards synergistic partnerships with authorities and related parties.

 

Others

National Youth Achievement Award Singapore

The aim of the NYAA Scheme is to encourage young people between the ages of 14 and 25 years to develop personal qualities of self-reliance, perseverance and a sense of responsibility to themselves, to society and to the nation.  The criteria for an award are those of self-improvement and effort. The participant is judged on personal achievement measured against original circumstances and potential capabilities. This allows for the less able and disadvantaged to participate on an equal opportunity basis.
