The 1st Annual Bird Census took place on 20 April 1986 where the Bird Group recorded nearly 6,000 birds of 129 species. In 2009, 40 observers at 23 sites counted a total of 7,135 birds from 144 species, the lowest numbers since 2005. Are wild birds doing well in Singapore? The general trend seems to be improving. In the last decade, we recorded a total of 220 species, representing 60% of Singapore’s avifauna. Amongst this, 42% of the 220 species have shown an increase in numbers, 28% are on a decline, 5% showed no change, while the last 25% could not be assessed due to a lack of data. The Bird Group published our census data in the book “State of Singapore’s Wild Birds and Bird Habitats” last year. We want to collect more data in order to better analyse trends and formulate conservation strategies. Starting at 7.30 am, this one-day census will include many known birding sites in Singapore. Our members’ enthusiastic participation and the resulting data collected over the last 24 years have assisted the Society in piecing together conservation proposals, assessing the state of our natural habitats, and giving us an overview of the general population trends of our birds. Do our feathered friends a favour and participate in this year’s census. We hope to cover at least 25 sites for our 25th year. All we need is your ability to spot and count.
