MST is just around the corner, yet participants from different schools and SP Environment Club members come together to join us in this very first biofuel plant visit we had organised.

To start off the tour we had last Saturday, we boarded a chartered bus that was running on bio-diesel, fuelled by Alpha Biofuels. We were warmly welcomed by Jaimie and Alvin, the project managers of Alpha Biofuels upon arriving at the plant.

Nature Trek @ Macritchie Reservoir PDF Print E-mail

This event brought us to Macritchie Reservoir for a nature trek. Before the start of the trek, we walked from Marymount MRT Station to the Macritchie Reservoir instead of taking the public transport to further reduce our carbon footprint.

Upon our arrival at Macritchie Reservoir Park, we saw a few monkeys prowling around. Honestly, most of the participants have not seen such monkeys before, therefore it was quite an eye-opener for them.

19 November 2010 – Approximately 1pm, we all set off for Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve by bus. The journey took us around an hour. When we reached Sungei Buloh, we carried down our boots from the bus and started to find the right pair of boots for ourselves. The NParks staff brought us into the reserve area. There, we saw a few buckets of water. When asked what was that for, the staff explained that we have to wash our boots before going into the reserve. The staff briefed us on the safety aspect before carrying out our mangrove salvation.

Joint Beach Cleanup 2010 PDF Print E-mail

On 30th of October, a total of 20 participants from both SP Environment Club and SP Rotaract Club gathered together for a Coastal Cleanup at East Coast Park.

Everyone was enjoying the weather while looking for litter in sands and grounds. The highest number of litter picked on that day is no doubt, cigarette butt! Each group picked an average of 100 cigarette butts. This shows that good habit of proper disposal should (again!) be reinforced to Singaporeans despite of anti-littering campaigns.

The objective was to bring down the current 390 ppm of atmospheric carbon dioxide value to 350 ppm, the upper limit of carbon dioxide concentration for safety. In Singapore itself, the biggest celebration on 10:10:10 was namely Balik Kampung @ Bottle Tree Park, organized by GroundUpInitiatives (GUI).

“Enough protest marches, enough banners, enough websites. Let's roll up our sleeves and start solving the problem, all together.”

10:10global (www.1010global.org), together with 350 (www.350.org), coordinates a Global Work Party on 10th October 2010, aka 10:10:10. This global work party emphasizes on everyone’s cumulative contributions to cut carbon dioxide by 10% starting 2010 so that the current 392 ppm of atmospheric carbon dioxide value could be brought down to 350 ppm, the upper safety limit eventually.

As we said, this is a global event, hence of course not excluding Singapore. In Singapore itself, this most happening event would be manifested into a “Balik Kampung Carnival”. Missed out on this event, do not worry. Here are the updates! On 3 September, we went to Lecture Theatre 7 for a 3 hour workshop on recycling and interpersonal communication together with our dear students from Outram Secondary School and Pei Hwa Secondary School. The workshop was conducted by a professional company and as we played along to their activities. We certainly learnt a great deal about recycling too!

CDL ECO Race PDF Print E-mail

18th of April 2010 marks the CDL E-Generation challenge, were you in the race? I wasn't, it flags off at Singapore Polytechnic and ended at Singapore's 1st Eco-mall, City Square Mall. I was awaitng for the teams arrival at City Square Mall. Me being a helper? Nope, me being a supporter!!!

Here is a write up by Kho Yu Li, Member of Singapore Polytechnic Environment Club 2009/2010...

I was excited just like anyone else to be able to participate in the Race representing SP. It feels totally like the amazing race on our televison which I felt it was cool. Throughout the morning, everything went on smoothly with not much hiccups.

Being in the Sun Group ( which is  motors.) Upon arrival, we had to queue up for 3 of the different stations - which includes segway, bicycle and electric bike. The rides were absolutely fun but the waiting time was the killer of all being in a race. What I thought could be improve was like what was happening in "The Amazing Race", where we can choose between 3 of these rides. This makes the time spent on this station shorter and groups can race against time for this Eco Race competition.

Most of us were pretty us-sure about the scoring system due to the lack of elaboration during the briefing. On top of that, due to the time constraint, we're told complete 1 question of out of the 4 questions, which the answers were on the electrical bike that was overcrowded with the other groups thus my team chose to use the ordinary bikes as this was a race.

Still I am glad to know that most of us had lots of us despite the many obstacles and wrong choices we made. Still I really wish to know what our ranking were out of so many teams. I look forward to next year's eco race if they still have it. It is indeed a race challenging our mind, and physical demands. I would like to thank CDL and the various sponsors for organizing such a great event. - the end

Hmmm...it seems like there are many positive and negative comments to consider on..wow..I might consider joining next year...Come on...lets join next year..we are all youths...
