19 November 2010 – Approximately 1pm, we all set off for Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve by bus. The journey took us around an hour. When we reached Sungei Buloh, we carried down our boots from the bus and started to find the right pair of boots for ourselves. The NParks staff brought us into the reserve area. There, we saw a few buckets of water. When asked what was that for, the staff explained that we have to wash our boots before going into the reserve. The staff briefed us on the safety aspect before carrying out our mangrove salvation.
On 30th of October, a total of 20 participants from both SP Environment Club and SP Rotaract Club gathered together for a Coastal Cleanup at East Coast Park.
Everyone was enjoying the weather while looking for litter in sands and grounds. The highest number of litter picked on that day is no doubt, cigarette butt! Each group picked an average of 100 cigarette butts. This shows that good habit of proper disposal should (again!) be reinforced to Singaporeans despite of anti-littering campaigns.
My mother had an old Nokia 3310 phone which lasted her almost a decade. When I bought her a new Nokia recently to replace the ailing device, it couldn't even last 1 year without something going wrong internally! This system of dump electronics is not only not sustainable for the environment, its also unsustainable to our pockets!
Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong urged Singaporeans to defend the environment as they would their country. Speaking to a crowd at the opening ceremony of Clean & Green Week Singapore 2011, Mr Lee noted that like Total Defence; keeping Singapore clean & green could only be achieved through the active participation of Singaporeans hand in hand with the government.
Mr Lee's speech brings a renewed hope that there will be positive changes made by the government to give a boost to the local environment scene.
10 October 2010 aka 10:10:10 is a joint global event by 350.org and 1010global.org, encouraging everyone’s cumulative contributions to cut carbon dioxide by 10% starting 2010. The objective was to bring down the current 390 ppm of atmospheric carbon dioxide value to 350 ppm, the upper limit of carbon dioxide concentration for safety. In Singapore itself, the biggest celebration on 10:10:10 was namely Balik Kampung @ Bottle Tree Park, organized by GroundUpInitiatives (GUI).
