Bring Your Own Bag: Is it effective 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 0
BYOB or Bring Your Own Bag has been around for quite a number of years already. Earthlink NTU has also adopted it as one of its campaigns.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate BYOB currently?

i think most people aint bring their own bags loh.

and charging 10cents is way too little.
if i can remember correctly, many developed countries charge $1 per bag

The Bring Your Own Bag thing seems to be very useless. Even if you're gonna pay a couple of dimes for that one bag, you wouldn't want to inconvenience yourself with lugging some huge sack or a bulky handbag along just to fit your groceries.

In some countries, supermarkets don't usually ask you to pay for the bags. But small chains like Marks and Spencer's charge you for the plastic bag. Why make people who are buying in bulk pay?? Shouldn't it be those who buy tiny items and really don't need the bags that we ought to extract money from?

In Singapore, the system is totally useless. It only happens on one day of the week, and so no-one goes to the supermarket to buy stuff to avoid the extra tax. Another inconvenience.

would it be time byob is reviewed? I think retailers are not taking it serious enough.

IMO byob can solely be improved if retailers ask before giving bags. especially places like macdonalds and old chang kee. Then even without the $0.10 thingy it would also be beneficial

we have been lobbying for more dayz guys but after 3 years..they finally allowed wed (being the quietest day of the week in terms of business)
we have a large plastic manufacturing ind in singapore due to our oil refinery activities...we also got to solve who happens to them if plastic production reduces drastically.
to compound it further....after spending millions on our 4 incinerator plants...do you think our authorrities would spend more on recycling plastic and make these incinerators plant close down?
i just found out our hear recovery from these incinerator plants aint very good...compared to other more advanced incinerator operators in europe.
